|Leaping Into The Future|
The way that humans interface with computers likely will change dramatically this coming May. May 13th is when the global backlog of pre-orders for the Leap Motion Controllers will begin shipping. May 19th is when Best Buy stores begin their exclusive distribution and sales arrangement in the United States. So what exactly is the Leap Motion Controller and what’s the buzz about?
Leap Motion Controllers are a combination of hardware and software that permit you to interface with your computer using 3D motions and gestures from your fingers and hands. With a wave of your hand or the lift of your finger, you’re about to change the way you use your computer. The Leap Motion Controller senses how you move your hands, the way you move them naturally. You can point, wave, reach, and grab. Even pick something up and put it down. The same way you do in real life.
“The Leap Motion Controller senses how you move your hands, the way you move them naturally.”
The Leap Motion Controller will support operating system interactions with Windows 7 and 8, and Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8. They will also come with access to Airspace™, an exclusive Leap Motion application store where users can discover optimized software across a wide variety of categories including gaming, music, education, art, productivity and more. Retail price for the controller is $79.99.
One would have to go back to the introduction of the mouse to the computing environment to be able to compare the quantum leap forward this technology represents. This technology, along with continually evolving improvements in voice recognition capabilities, assures that interaction between humans and computers is changing dramatically. Now if they could just figure out how to link human thoughts to produce reactions in computers.
