Mobile Technology And The Work-Life Balance

balanceMobile technology, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets, makes communication in the workplace faster and can even greatly increase productivity. We are able to check email almost everywhere we go, which can make defining where work ends and personal life begins very difficult.

Employers are recognizing that, for many employees, the work day is never ending. Employees are going home and working on their laptops or responding to email on their smartphones. Although it seems this could be very beneficial for the company, there can be downfalls to this situation. One example is that employees can get burned out, which could lead to a loss in productivity due to the employee not putting forth his/her best work.

Companies are changing policies to make sure employees have a better work-life balance. This may include limiting or eliminating email or phone calls after hours or on the weekend. Germany has banned mangers from calling or emailing employees about work after business hours, except in the case of emergency. Does your company have a policy that addresses a timeframe in which employees are not obligated to check email? It may be beneficial to look at your current work-life balance and see if making changes could improve productivity. Share your thoughts on Twitter @bemaservicesWritten by Clint Rasmussen.
